We have been a leading advocate for new US maritime investment, manufacturing, and next-generation smart solutions.
US Smart Container Industry
- Smart containers collect real-time data across and throughout the global transportation and supply chain networks.
- 95% of global container manufacturing is controlled by Chinese State-Owned Enterprises.
- Container shipping lines are investing in smart containers to expand their control and reach throughout the global transportation and supply chain networks.
US Port Community System
- US shippers are demanding real-time data and visibility to better manage global supply chains.
- The FMC’s Maritime Transportation Data Initiative is responding to shipper demands.
- Port Community Systems will be needed to collect and share data.

The fact sheet: Biden-Harris Cybersecurity Initiative at US Ports A Good Start
The Biden-Harris Administration announced that they will issue an Executive Order to bolster the security of the nation’s ports, alongside a series of additional actions that will strengthen maritime cybersecurity, fortify our supply chains and strengthen the United States industrial base.
In response to Administration’s announcement, John D. McCown a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Center for Maritime Strategy and colleague of The Howland Group responded to the cybersecurity initiative in an article that appeared in The MOC (Maritime Operations Center) online journal produced by the Center for Maritime Strategy.
Mr. McCown pointed out that 80% of worldwide crane manufacturing occurs in China and should be seen as a national security issue. As well, McCown echoes the sentiments of many that in addition to restoring US crane manufacturing the US needs to pursue a US crane manufacturing effort. All of these components are linked by a data collection system that currently poses a cybersecurity risk.
Mr. McCown has four decades of experience related to the shipping industry and his analysis focuses on the intersection of merchant shipping and maritime commerce with national security.
Mr. McCown’s full article can be read here.
